He was told to do so- pretend (or lie) to gain an advantage. For, as the scriptures put it, 1 Nephi 4:13. "13. Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." Sometimes deceit- or lying- or pretending can be used to achieve a righteous purpose. The trick...being told to do so by a greater power. I think, us, on our own, without God's direction, would be lying under Satans guidance. Does any of this even make sense...good grief I am a dork!
